A belt that has never existed in Greek boxing will be fought for in Athens this December. Dionysis Stroumpis is set to contest the WBC national title at VIP Boxing, and the announcement carries as much weight for the sport's domestic scene as for the fighter himself.
The news came from Stelios Petroutsos in an Instagram post. According to Fightsports Greece, which relayed it, Petroutsos described this as the first time the belt is contested in the history of Greek boxing. That makes the winner the first holder of the title, whoever it turns out to be.
Stroumpis fights out of the Golden Gloves club and trains under Giannis Karamichalis. The outlet frames the bout as a significant opportunity for him to add another achievement to his career. No record or recent results for him appear in the reporting, so how he arrives at the fight is not yet clear.
The biggest open question is the opponent. Organizers have not named anyone, and further details are expected in upcoming announcements from the promotion. Until a name is confirmed, it is hard to judge how competitive the contest will look on paper.
Watch for the opponent's announcement and for any further card details from VIP Boxing as the date approaches.
