INJURY UFC Vegas 124: Walker vs. Cortes-Acosta reportedly headlines after Brady's staph infection

A card that lost its headliner nine days out has found a replacement, and it comes from a different weight class. Johnny Walker and Waldo Cortes-Acosta are reportedly set to meet at heavyweight, with MMA Fighting citing sources. The UFC has not announced it, and no one has said whether the fight will run three or five rounds.

The bout exists because Sean Brady could not compete. He said on his podcast, The BradyBags Show, that his knee swelled after a Tuesday session last week and that he could not walk by night. Doctors waited for bacteria to grow and later confirmed staph, which Brady believes came from a small cut on the same knee he hurt before his loss to Michael Morales last November. Repeated drainings did not clear it in time. He said he pushed the UFC to keep him on a 2026 card, but the remaining events were either unavailable to him or full, so he is aiming for the Jan. 16 show in Dallas.

Gabriel Bonfim is the other loser here. The UFC could not find him a short-notice opponent, according to Laerte Viana, who first reported the news, and it is not known whether he stays on the card. Brady thinks the matchup could be rebooked given how thin the top of the welterweight division is.

For Walker, the timing is abrupt. He is 34, moved up to heavyweight with a first-round knee knockout of Mick Parkin at UFC 332 on Oct. 3, and had told talkSPORT he expected his next fight in December and wanted Marcin Tybura. Instead he gets a ranked opponent in a main event. Outlets list him at No. 12, so a win could carry him toward the top 10.

Cortes-Acosta, 35, has more to protect. He is ranked in the heavyweight top 10 and is coming off decision losses to Alexander Volkov and Curtis Blaydes, after a run that included knockouts of Derrick Lewis, Shamil Gaziev and Ante Delija. A third straight defeat, to a fighter in his second heavyweight bout, would hurt. Tatiana Suarez vs. Virna Jandiroba stays as the co-main event.

Elsewhere on the card, Lucas Brennan confirmed a full ACL tear and is out of his fight with Austin Bashi. No replacement for Bashi has been named. Watch for an official UFC announcement of the new main event, its round count, and Bonfim's plans.
