What we know
- Salkilld vs. Saint-Denis is a five-round lightweight main event and the only bout announced so far for UFC Sydney.
Quillan Salkilld gets his first main event at home, and a win over Benoit Saint-Denis would push him toward the top of the lightweight division. The UFC announced the fight on Tuesday as the headliner of its Sydney card at Afterpay Arena. It is the only bout made official so far.
Salkilld, 26, is undefeated in the UFC and has finished his last four fights in the first round. His latest win was a first-round rear-naked choke of Mateusz Gamrot in August, his first UFC main event. He lost his 2021 pro debut by submission and has won 13 straight since. He came through Contender Series in 2024 and is a former Eternal MMA champion.
Saint-Denis, 30, needs the win more. Pimblett submitted him in 52 seconds at UFC 329, ending a four-fight run of finishes over Mauricio Ruffy, Beneil Dariush and Dan Hooker. He beat Hooker in January. All 17 of his wins have come by stoppage, 11 of them by submission, so this is a meeting of two finishers.
The rankings are split. Salkilld holds sixth place in the UFC's new Meta ratings and Saint-Denis seventh, while the media ranking puts the Frenchman ahead. Salkilld told Fox Sports Australia he wants revenge for Hooker and expects a quick night: "I don't think it will get past the first round." He named Pimblett as the opponent he wants next.
Alexander Volkanovski, speaking to Paramount, said he likes Saint-Denis but that Salkilld will wreck him, and that a win puts Salkilld among the contenders and in line for fighters like Pimblett.
The prelims carry the Road to UFC season 5 finals, one per division, each winner getting a UFC contract. Takaya Suzuki faces Ji Niushuiye at flyweight, Ryo Tajima meets Rabindra Dhant at bantamweight, and George Mangos faces Dagiisuren Chagnaadorj at featherweight. At women's strawweight, 29-3 veteran Meng Bo meets BoHyun Park, who reached the final with a split decision over Dong Huaxiang and a unanimous decision over Farida Abdueva. The rest of the card and ticket on-sale details are still to come.
