Heavy on UFC
Lone'er Kavanagh did not ask for a ladder. Hours after one of the cleanest finishes of UFC 333, he asked for the flyweight belt, and he has a way to get close to it: the title fight between champion Joshua Van and Manel Kape was announced during the same broadcast.
The fight itself turned on one counter. Ramazan Temirov came forward throwing everything with power and missed big while Kavanagh stayed patient and moved out of range. Then Kavanagh slipped a punch, landed a left uppercut and swarmed with a combination until referee Mike Beltran stepped in at 4:28. Temirov arrived with 13 first-round finishes on his record and a 12-fight winning streak. Kavanagh beat him at his own game.
The win matters because of where Kavanagh was. He is 27, out of Great Britain Top Team, and had lost to Brandon Royval in July in a fight that still earned Fight of the Night. Before that he had beaten former champion Brandon Moreno in a late-notice main event. Now he is back with a finish over a ranked, dangerous opponent, and according to Knockout Daily he took home a Performance of the Night bonus, sharing it with Alexander Volkanovski.
Kavanagh's plan is simple. At the post-fight press conference he said, "I'm here for that title... I'm happy to wait for the winner." Asked about the backup role for Van vs. Kape, he said "definitely." The UFC has not said whether he will get the spot or a title shot, and a fight with a top-five opponent may come before any belt, as Knockout Daily pointed out. He also said he would love to fight at the O2 when the UFC returns to London, usually around March.
Temirov took the loss calmly. In an Instagram statement he thanked God and apologized to his compatriots for not justifying their trust this time. Heavy on UFC noted he should stay ranked in the flyweight top 10, since Kavanagh ranked ahead of him, and his next opponent is not yet known.
Watch for the UFC's decision on the standby slot for Van vs. Kape in Toronto, and for whether Kavanagh's next fight comes before that bout or waits for its outcome.
