Two lightweights separated by a single ranking spot will headline UFC Sydney, and the winner is expected to start looking at the division's top five. The UFC announced the fight on Tuesday night, and Salkilld gets a home crowd for it.

Salkilld, 26, has built the stronger recent run. He beat Mateusz Gamrot by first-round rear-naked choke in August, his first main event, after first-round finishes of Jamie Mullarkey and Beneil Dariush. According to Heavy on UFC, he has won five of his first six UFC fights in the first round and earned a bonus for every finish. Knockout Daily, citing MMA Junkie's research with UFC stats producer Michael Carroll, says his six-fight UFC lightweight win streak ties Arman Tsarukyan for the longest active run in the division.

Saint-Denis, 30, needs this one more. Heavy on UFC reports he was choked out in under a minute by Paddy Pimblett earlier this year, a loss that came after wins over Mauricio Ruffy, Beneil Dariush and Dan Hooker. He had earlier lost to Dustin Poirier and Renato Moicano. Another defeat would push him further from the top of the division.

The rankings tell the story of how close the matchup looks. Salkilld is No. 7 in the UFC Media rankings and No. 6 in the Meta rankings, and Saint-Denis holds the reverse. No betting line has been posted, but Lowking lists Salkilld at 1.50 and Saint-Denis at 2.50, making the Australian the favorite.

The lightweight picture may shift before February. Moicano meets Tom Nolan, an Australian with a five-fight UFC winning streak, in the UFC Vegas 123 main event on Oct. 31, and Knockout Daily expects the rankings to move after that card.
