Bloody Elbow
Tsarukyan got the belt and the shutout, but the week around RAF 14 was defined by what happened outside the scoring. Two flashpoints involving Dillon Danis, one before the match and one after, leave RAF with questions it has not yet answered.
The first came at the press conference on Thursday, Oct. 22. Danis mocked Khamzat Chimaev, Tsarukyan's teammate, and Tsarukyan swung at him. A brawl followed that Red Corner MMA said pulled in members of several teams, and Ariel Helwani wrote that one security guard was bleeding. In the main event Tsarukyan, a far more accomplished wrestler, ended it 10-0 in the first period. He then stepped on Danis as he got to his feet, and security kept them apart. Tsarukyan says the beef is squashed.
The second incident came after the bout. Sherdog reported that video appears to show a spectator kicking Danis; the spectator has not been identified. No discipline has been reported for the kick, the stomp or the press conference fight. Chuck Liddell told TMZ Sports he wants someone punished: "Someone's gotta be punished for it." Danis, 33, has now lost all three of his RAF matches, falling earlier to Colby Covington and Chimaev. Jon Jones mocked him on Instagram.
Dana White, asked about Danis at the UFC 333 press conference in Abu Dhabi, said a fight breaks out every time Danis shows up somewhere. That is why Danis is banned from the UFC.
Tsarukyan is already looking past Danis. At 30, he is the UFC's No. 1 lightweight contender, coming off a first-round elbow KO of Mauricio Ruffy on Sept. 19, and says the UFC has promised a title shot in February or March 2027. In RAF he wants big names and said he would like to wrestle St-Pierre. Nobody has said St-Pierre is interested.
What to watch: RAF co-founder Bronstein said an Armenia event on Jan. 9 depends on Tsarukyan being able to headline. Chimaev, who beat Lawler on the card, meets Covington in Abu Dhabi on Nov. 14. Whether RAF acts on the brawl, the stomp and the kick is still open.
