Alexandre Pantoja will rest for a long time with no return date set, American Top Team coach Marcos Parrumpinha said, citing wear from back-to-back five-round camps.
What we know
- Alexandre Pantoja has no set return date and will rest for a long time, according to ATT coach Marcos Parrumpinha.
- Parrumpinha says Pantoja is worn down by successive five-round camps and an injury recovery that prevented planned rest.
- Parrumpinha says Arman Tsarukyan has proven he deserves a lightweight title shot against Justin Gaethje or Alexander Volkanovski.
- Parrumpinha says no interim lightweight title is needed because Gaethje must choose between defending and retiring.
American Top Team coach Marcos Parrumpinha told Conexão PVT that Alexandre Pantoja has no timetable to return to the Octagon. He said the Brazilian piled up heavy wear from successive five-round camps, and that an injury recovery got in the way of rest that had been planned.
Parrumpinha said Pantoja has to rest both body and mind: "He will rest for a good while, we have no forecast at all for his return" (translated).
On Arman Tsarukyan, the coach said the lightweight has proven he deserves a title shot, whether against Justin Gaethje or Alexander Volkanovski. He argued no interim belt is needed, since Gaethje will have to decide between defending the title and ending his career.
He also said Renato Moicano, who fights Tom Nolan on Saturday, could stop fighting but he doesn't think so, and that the opponent change from Brian Ortega required strategy adjustments without hurting the camp.
