Two lightweights ranked one spot apart will headline UFC Sydney, and the winner starts to look at the division's top five. Salkilld gets the fight at home, in the first Sydney Fight Night since 2017.
Salkilld, 26, has the stronger momentum. He is 6-0 in the UFC after submitting Mateusz Gamrot in the first round of his first main event in August, following first-round finishes of Jamie Mullarkey and Beneil Dariush. According to Heavy on UFC, he has won five of his first six UFC fights in the first round. Knockout Daily, citing MMA Junkie's research, says his six-fight UFC lightweight win streak ties Arman Tsarukyan for the longest active run in the division. After beating Gamrot he called for Saint-Denis at Madison Square Garden, and he got the opponent if not the venue.
Saint-Denis, 30, needs this one more. He was submitted by Paddy Pimblett in 52 seconds at UFC 329 in July, a loss that ended a four-fight winning streak that included Dan Hooker, Dariush and Mauricio Ruffy. He knows the city: he beat Hooker in Sydney at UFC 325. Another loss would push him back toward the crowd of Moicano, Gamrot and Ruffy.
The rankings show how close the matchup looks. Salkilld is No. 7 and Saint-Denis No. 6 in one list, and the reverse in another, depending on the outlet. No betting line has been posted, but Lowking lists Salkilld at 1.50 and Saint-Denis at 2.50.
The prelims carry their own stakes. Four Road to UFC season 5 finals, one per division, each hand the winner a UFC contract. Two Japanese fighters are in them: Takaya Suzuki, who meets Ji Niushuiye at flyweight, and Ryo Tajima, who meets Rabindra Dhant at bantamweight.
The lightweight picture may shift before February. Renato Moicano meets Tom Nolan, an Australian on a five-fight UFC winning streak, in the UFC Vegas 123 main event on Oct. 31, and Knockout Daily expects the rankings to move after that card. More bouts for Sydney are still to be announced.
