Makhachev is out because of an injury, according to Heavy; other outlets say only that the date did not work and the UFC has given no reason.
Heavy
The UFC filled out UFC 336 during the UFC 333 broadcast in Abu Dhabi. The plan had been Makhachev vs. Prates, but the date stopped working for the champion, so the promotion booked Prates and Morales for an interim 170-pound belt. Prates (24-7) has knocked out Geoff Neal, Leon Edwards and Jack Della Maddalena in a row. Morales (19-0) has three straight first-round finishes, but he has not fought since November 2025, about 14 months before this date.
In the flyweight bout, Joshua Van (18-2) makes his third defense against Manel Kape (23-7), who gets his first UFC title shot after four straight knockout wins. Van took the belt from Alexandre Pantoja in December 2025 and has since beaten Tatsuro Taira and then Pantoja again in a rematch.
The main event is not settled across outlets. Yahoo Sports reported Prates vs. Morales as the five-round main event, while MMA Fighting, Bloody Elbow and Cageside Press have Van vs. Kape headlining. Makhachev's absence is also unexplained: some reports say only that the date did not work, while Heavy says he is injured.
Jon Anik said on the broadcast that the UFC plans Makhachev's next defense for May to July, according to Knockout Daily. That puts the interim winner next in line, since Ramadan begins Feb. 8 and rules out a quick return.
